Social Startups, NEP 2020 and 2.5 Lakh Grants: Inside Ludhiana's Dolphin Tank
Nar Seva Foundation believes that the best way to build a caring city is to teach its young people to serve - and in Ludhiana, the Dolphin Tank Student Startup Programme is doing exactly that. As a partner and jury member in the programme, Nar Seva Foundation is helping students turn classroom learning into real social ventures, backed by mentorship, structure and meaningful grants.
What is a social startup?
A social startup is a venture built to solve a genuine community problem in a way that can sustain itself over time. Instead of chasing profit alone, these teams design solutions around real needs - in healthcare, education, environment or livelihoods - that they discovered by studying how NGOs and communities actually work.
In the Dolphin Tank mock presentation round, 27 teams drawn from more than 150 students did just that. Each team had first visited local NGOs in Ludhiana, spoken with community workers, field managers and beneficiaries, and then returned to present the true challenges those organisations face along with sustainable, impactful solutions.
Grounded in NEP 2020
What makes the programme especially timely is how closely it aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. NEP 2020 champions experiential learning, community engagement, critical thinking, entrepreneurship and multidisciplinary education - and Dolphin Tank puts every one of those ideas into practice.
By pushing students out of the lecture hall and into the field, the programme helps them confront real-world social challenges and build the leadership, innovation and problem-solving skills they will carry for life. For Nar Seva Foundation, this is education at its best: knowledge in the service of people.
The grants and the grand finale
The stakes are real. After a rigorous evaluation, the top 10 teams were shortlisted to advance to the grand finale, where they will pitch before a panel of 18 'Dolphins' - the judges who give the programme its name. From there, the top five teams will each receive a grant of 2,50,000 rupees to implement their social cause alongside their NGO partners and scale it with meaningful action.
Every pitch was weighed on the relevance of the identified problem, its impact potential, feasibility, budget justification, sustainability, and the team's own understanding and presentation skills - the same disciplines any serious changemaker must master.
A programme built on partnership
The Dolphin Tank Student Startup Programme is run by City-Needs Innovation Pvt Ltd in collaboration with the District Administration, Ludhiana as official partner, along with Nar Seva Foundation and several educational institutions. It was launched on 1 April 2026 by Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, with the aim of boosting youth-led social innovation and strengthening the collaboration between NGOs and educational institutions.
